Besides its artistic design and beautiful natural location, Commune by The Great Wall also has an innovative Bites with a viewgourmet's selection of fine foods. This is the most delightful season for a visit to the hotel, especially for lunch. The Terrace Lounge restaurant of the Commune Club on the second floor boasts beautiful mountain views of the Great Wall. From inside or the outdoor balcony, the Great Wall can be seen hiding beneath Fall foliage.

The hotel is now managed by Kempinski, and executive chef Sonny Sun is a Beijinger. He worked for 20 years in capital hotels such as St. Regis and the Peninsula Palace Hotel. Besides Western cuisine emphasizing Italian and French flavors, the restaurant prepares classic Beijing, Sichuan and Cantonese food, as well as a separate list of vegetarian choices.

Peking duck is a specialty here, with an interesting choice being the roasted Peking duck burger. The crunchy burger uses ground duck breast, with crisp, fragrant duck skin on the steak.

"In terms of Western foods, we try to serve traditionally prepared dishes for foreign expats, while trying to cater to Asian people's tastes who are not used to the taste of Europe," said Sun.

Many ingredients are imported, such as risotto, Parma ham from Italy, beef and mutton lamb from Australia.

Most ingredients used for the Chinese dishes are locally grown organic products, according to the chef. The dishes are beautifully prepared, with a mind to health and nutrition factors. Dishes are lightly salted, but with plenty of flavor.

Commune by the Great Wall is an hour's drive from town. The hotel is close to Badaling, Badaling Water Gate and Juyongguan parts of the Wall, as well as to the Ming Tombs, a golf course, a skiing resort, and an equestrian club.
